Icons

Through my research into Art History I became interested in the art of icon painting and made the decision to learn the art of icon writing. Since 2009 I have been learning to write icons with the Association of Iconographers in Ireland. I  am using the traditional techniques and materials of icon painting – egg tempera, gold leaf on gesso on board. My residency in Georgia in 2010 gave me the opportunity to visit some fantastic examples of icon painting in a country where icon painting originally developed. I have used this technique in work based on the residency as can be seen in the triptych Deisis, Georgia.

In 2013 the Temple Street Children’s Hospital Primary School commissioned me to write an icon of

The Virgin Hedegetria – She who shows us the way.
