Travels in Armenia

In October I participated in Samkura residency in Armenia and Georgia with Eoin MacLochlainn, Heidi Nguyen and Marjorie Doohan. This was a whistle stop tour of Armenia over three days. We were hosted by Acoss Artist in Residence in Yervan. Mkrtich Tonoyan, director of Acoss was our eminent host and guide and was a font of knowledge and stories on all aspects of Armenian culture and history.

We visited the Gerhard Monastery – a stunning cave monastery founded in the 4th Century with the earliest cave churches dating from St.Gregory in the 7th Century. This is an amazing feat of architecture and craftsmanship. The carvings and embellishments throughout were strangely similar to our own High Crosses and with the sacred spring water and wish trees made us very aware of the strong links between the cultures of Ireland and Armenia. Other places included Garni, Dilijan and Lake Sevan.
